Kayak Stanchions (Ayaperwig)
Wood, sealskin, pigment
Nash Harbor ca. 1933
Collector: Otto W. Geist
These pieces of wood fit inside the wooden frame of the kayak, inside
the cockpit, on either side of the hunter. The smiling face represents
the male good luck and would go on the starboard side. The frowning
face represents the female bad luck and would be placed on the port
side. Having both kept the hunter's spirit balanced.
