Nuniwarmiut elders state that the Pacific cod (atgiiyar) was once a major subsistence species but disappeared from the Nunivak Island waters about the year that this photograph was taken. NPT is currently (2005-2007) conducting a traditional knowledge and use study of the Pacific cod, learn more here.
