The Nunivak Island place name project began as an outgrowth of U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs ANCSA 14(h)(1) Historical Place and Cemetery Site investigations on Nunivak Island in 1986 and 1991.
Following BIA ANCSA work on the island, grants were applied for by the Native Village of Mekoryuk, IRA Council, to continue the process of recording place names and information about places.
In 1999 we formed a cultural non-profit corporation, Nuniwarmiut Piciryarata Tamayalkuti, which took over management and research on the NPNP and other cultural heritage and Native language projects in the village.
